Men charged over flood stunts

Three men have been charged with reckless behaviour in Queensland's floods, after one allegedly jumped off a bridge into a swollen river and others had to be rescued from the roof of their stranded car.

Police say a 25-year-old North Ipswich man deliberately jumped off the Bradfield Bridge in Ipswich about 10am (AEST) on Tuesday.

He swam to shore, where police were waiting.

He was charged with one count of unregulated high risk activity and was due to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on January 11.

Meanwhile in southeast Queensland, two men were charged after they ignored road warnings and became trapped on flooded roads.

It will be alleged that a man drove past a road closed sign before becoming trapped on a flooded causeway on Electra Street, Bundaberg about 7.30pm (AEST) on Monday.

He and his male passenger had to be rescued from the roof of their car.

Neither were injured.

The driver, a 44-year-old Bundaberg North man, was charged with driving without due care and attention.

He is expected to appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on February 2.

And in Larapinta, south of Brisbane, it will be alleged that a man attempted to drive through the floodwaters on Paradise Road and became stranded halfway.

He was forced to seek refuge on the roof of his truck after floodwaters entered the cabin.

A swift water rescue boat had to retrieve the driver.

The 22-year-old Forestdale man has been issued with a notice to appear for driving without due care and attention.

The State Disaster Co-ordinator Deputy Commissioner Ian Stewart said motorists should not attempt to drive across flooded roadways or swim in flooded creeks.

"It is disappointing to hear that despite constant warnings, people are willing to risk their own lives by being foolish," he said in a statement.

"Make no mistake about it, you are gambling with your life when you try and take on floodwaters."
