Men's health research gets govt funding

The federal government is giving $1.3 million in grants to two researchers striving to help improve treatments for men with prostate cancer and infertility.

Researchers aiming to improve prospects for men struggling with prostate cancer and infertility will receive federal government support.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said grants totalling $1.3 million are being given to two Australian researchers focused on the conditions.

One of them, Monash University's Professor Melissa Southey, is investigating managing prostate and breast cancer using precision medicine, which involves targeting treatments to certain people.

Sperm function and what causes men's infertility is the focus of the other study, by the University of Newcastle's Professor Brett Nixon.

The announcement comes as experts met in Canberra on Thursday to work on a new 10-year plan for improving men's health.

Mr Hunt said the group has identified key priorities for the strategy.

"The 10-year strategy will aim for equal health outcomes for all population groups at risk of poor health," he said in a statement.

A similar meeting was held on Wednesday which began working on the next plan for women's health, with $18 million in federal funding announced for research aimed at improving health outcomes for women.
