Treasurer Joe Hockey sees some merit in linking eligibility for the age pension to life expectancy rather than having a fixed retirement date.

The government was endeavouring to give consistency, stability and predictability to the retirement income system and its plan to raise the pension age to 70 from 67 in 2035 was part of that strategy, Mr Hockey told the Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research conference in Canberra on Wednesday.

"The fundamental question is whether you can do this step-by-step or whether you have to take a more holistic approach."
