Merit review agencies to merge into one

The commonwealth's disparate accumulation of merit review agencies will be merged into a single super tribunal.

It will take in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Migration Review Tribunal, Refugee Review Tribunal, Social Security Appeals Tribunal and Classification Review board.

Attorney-General George Brandis said the decision would remove unnecessary layers of bureaucracy and deliver an improved system of merits review, saving $20.2 million over four years.

"The merger of merits review agencies will provide an accessible one-stop shop," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

It would ensure that end users had a review option that was fair, less confusing, just, economical and quick.

Senator Brandis said most states and territories had established similar super tribunals with considerable success.
