Michael Kors reveals 'laid-back' designs

Michael Kors new collection, revealed at New York Fashion Week, is a mix of "urban polish with laid-back northern California ease" and "urbane romance".

Billionaire New York designer Michael Kors mixed California ease with urbane romance, unveiling on Wednesday a soft, laid-back collection for autumn/winter 2014 in front of Hollywood stars.

Actresses Blake Lively and Freida Pinto sat front row next to silver screen legend Michael Douglas as models powered down the runway in floaty blouses and full skirts, diaphanous chiffon and fringed sweaters.

Kors, who entered the industry after listing his company on Wall Street in 2011, was one of the biggest draws of New York Fashion Week, which comes to a close on Thursday.

He described his collection as a "blend of urban polish with laid-back northern California ease" and as "urbane romance".

He offered artisanal embellishment for the day and sleek simplicity for the night, a mix of plaids, tweeds and python.

The clothes were worn with clogs or chunky city sandals - or black platforms with a ballet-shoe ribbon lace-up strap.

He presented his show in a loft that offered a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows.

There were peasant blouses with scooped neck lines, floaty printed dresses, sequined skirts and oversized sweaters. Looks were cinched at the waist with circular buckle belts.

At the end of the show, Kors ran out in black, doing a lap of honour on the U-shaped catwalk.

The designer has an ardent following among America's trend setters, from celebrity Kim Kardashian to Michelle Obama, and has designed clothes for actresses that have appeared on film and TV.
