Former US first lady Michelle Obama has appeared on television for the first time since leaving the White House last year and has revealed what was in the box she received from Melania Trump during an awkward inauguration day moment.

Obama has told TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres she received a "lovely frame" from the incoming first lady in an exchange that appeared awkward because she didn't quite know what to do with the Tiffany's gift.

"What am I supposed to do with this gift? Everyone cleared out. No one would come and take the box," she reflected with DeGeneres on Thursday.

During the interview Obama also said her pace of life has slowed down considerably since she and her family left the presidential residence.

"I wake up when I wanna wake up," she said in the interview.

"We are doing great, the girls are good, Barack is working, we got projects going, so we are staying busy."

DeGeneres asked Obama how people should cope in a country that continues to appear deeply divided by politics.

"I would just encourage your viewers, the country to do the things we do every day, to love each other, to take care of each other, to show empathy," said Obama.

"And forget what they are saying in Washington that is not necessarily who we are," she added.

The Obama's decided to stay in Washington so their youngest daughter, 16-year-old Sasha, could finish high school there. Her sister Malia, 19, recently started going to college.
