Mickelson chases captain's pick

Phil Mickelson needs a good week to give himself a chance at his 21st straight United States team call-up.

AP - Phil Mickelson only realised a few days ago that he is mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the Presidents Cup team.

Now he has one last chance to make an impression as a captain's pick and keep alive the longest streak in American team golf.

The left-hander has played on every Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup team for 20 consecutive years, a streak that is now in doubt.

That's not for a lack of desire but Mickelson simply hasn't been able to find his best this year or in 2014 for that matter.

The former world No.1 hasn't claimed a victory since winning the 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield Golf Links and Mickelson is on the verge of going two straight years without a win for the first time in his career.

His best performance in 2015 so far is a tied second at the Masters, which Jordan Spieth won in a canter.

That result was one of only three top-tens, with the others coming at the Wells Fargo Championship and the St. Jude Classic.

Mickelson says he wants to be on the team for the Oct. 8-11 matches in South Korea but knows he has to have a great week at the Deutsche Bank Championship to give U.S. captain Jay Haas a reason to pick him.
