Fairfax columnist Mike Carlton has resigned from his position after allegedly sending abusive emails and tweets to readers.

Fairfax had reportedly sought to suspend the Sydney Morning Herald columnist over the messages but Carlton resigned before that took place.
“As more emails emerged we figured we needed to suspend him. No one has the right to treat readers that way.”
Speaking on radio 2UE this morning Fairfax news and business publisher Sean Aylmer told listeners Carlton had “used language just not acceptable in the workplace."

"You just can’t do that," he said.

“As more emails emerged we figured we needed to suspend him. No one has the right to treat readers that way.”

Editor-in-Chief of The Sydney Morning Herald, Darren Goodsir, yesterday posted a statement online apologising for Carlton's comments.

"I have become aware that Mike Carlton has corresponded with some Herald readers and letter writers using inappropriate and offensive language," Mr Goodsir said in the statement.

"This behaviour is completely unacceptable."

"I have asked Mike to apologise for these actions. Mike regrets his behaviour and will be contacting affected readers to apologise.

"On behalf of the Herald, I too apologise for any offence caused.

"In dealing with our readers, it is a basic principle that our staff, columnists and contributors should always behave with respect and courtesy."

MORE TO COME.
