Milestone for Christchurch quake houses

Housing NZ has repaired 2500 state houses in Christchurch at a cost of $NZ55 million, about half the 5000 that were damaged by the quakes.

Half of the damaged state houses in the New Zealand city of Christchurch have been repaired but there's 2500 still to be fixed.

Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says 95 per cent of Housing NZ's properties were damaged in the earthquakes and about $NZ55 million ($A51.20 million) has so far been spent on repairs.

"HNZ has undertaken a large-scale repair and rebuild program that when completed by the end of 2015 will see 5000 damaged homes repaired and 700 new homes built," she said on Friday.

The 2500th repaired home, in Hornby, was given a full upgrade including new curtains, carpets, a paint job, a new heat pump and rangehood.

Ms Bennett says more than 200 properties are being repaired every month.

The repair program is part of a $NZ1.2 billion investment in social housing in Christchurch.
