British opposition leader Ed Miliband has announced his resignation as head of the Labour Party after a crushing defeat in the general election.
"It's time for someone else to take forward the interests of this party," said Miliband, who will remain in parliament.
"Britain needs a strong Labour Party... that can rebuild after this defeat," he added.
The party was given a drubbing by the Scottish National Party, which won 56 of the 59 seats in what was once seen as a Labour heartland.
With 640 seats counted, Labour had 229 seats, well short of the 258 it won in 2010, and the Conservatives had won a majority.
