Australia's Jack Miller will start Sunday's French Grand Prix from a career-high 18th on the grid, but the MotoGP rookie is far from satisfied with the result.

Miller's previous best qualifying position since joining the premier class this year was 19th for the Grand Prix of the Americas.

He bettered that on Saturday at the famous Le Mans circuit, where he took victory in Moto3 last season.

Rain washed out the final practice session, but the track dried up in time for qualifying.

"Qualifying wasn't a total disaster, we had some tricky conditions that didn't make life easy, but I felt really good in the wet weather so we have a good base if it rains tomorrow," Miller said.

"I'm still not happy with this qualifying position but it is our best so far, which means we are making steps forward.

"Our pace is pretty good for the race so we'll see tomorrow what happens!"

The race begins at 10pm (AEST).
