Millman beaten at US Open lead-up event

John Millman has gone down in straight sets to Japan's Taro Daniel in the first round of the ATP Tour's Winston-Salem Open.

Australian world No.54 John Millman has spurned a chance to make the second round of the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina.

The 29-year-old Queenslander lost 6-4 7-6 (9-7) to 76th-ranked Japanese Taro Daniel in their first-round match at the ATP 250 event.

Australian 15th seed Alex de Minaur, who had a bye in the opening round, will play Russian Daniil Medvedev in his opening match in the final lead-up tournament before next week's US Open.

Chilean 14th seed Nicolas Jarry eased past Italian veteran Andreas Seppi 6-4 6-3 to join German Jan-Lennard Struff, who stunned fourth-seeded Italian Marco Cecchinato 6-3 6-4, in the round of 16.

It was a good day out for the Americans on court with Ryan Harrison, wild card Taylor Fritz, Tennys Sandgren and qualifier Tommy Paul all progressing to the second round courtesy of straight-sets wins.

Others to advance past the first round included Argentines Leonardo Mayer and Horacio Zeballos.
