Millman in rare company with Federer upset

John Millman's stunning fourth-round defeat of Roger Federer at the US Open is the biggest upset by an Australian at a major in more than 30 years.

AUSTRALIA'S BIGGEST GRAND SLAM UPSETS

* JOHN MILLMAN v ROGER FEDERER (US Open 2018)

The unseeded Millman defied the odds with a massive fourth-round upset, becoming just the second Australian to beat Swiss maestro Federer at a major. The four-set triumph left fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium in shock and sent 20-times grand slam champion and world No.2 Federer crashing to his earliest defeat at a major in almost four years.

* PETER DOOHAN v BORIS BECKER (Wimbledon 1987)

Newcastle-born Doohan became forever known as the "Becker Wrecker" after sending two-time defending champion Becker crashing out in four sets in the second round at the All England Club. The world No.70 made it as far as the fourth round, equalling his best performance at a major. Becker went on to win a further four grand slam titles.

* MARK EDMONDSON v JOHN NEWCOMBE (Australian Open 1976)

Edmondson was ranked No.212 in the world when he stunned compatriot and defending champion Newcombe in four sets at Kooyong. He remains to this day the lowest-ranked man to win a grand slam in the Open era. The Gosford native went on to claim five grand slam doubles titles.

* CHARLIE FANCUTT v IVAN LENDL (Wimbledon 1981)

Czech-born American Lendl was the fourth seed and a star on the rise when he came up against Brisbane qualifier Fancutt first up at the All England Club. Fancutt prevailed in five sets but lost his next match and never made it past the fourth round at a grand slam. Lendl was ranked No.1 in the world less than two years later, going on to win eight major crowns.
