The draw at the Open Sud de France has opened up for Australian John Millman with journeyman Edouard Roger-Vasselin defeating fellow Frenchman and fifth seed Gael Monfils 6-4 7-6 (7-5).
Millman will now face Vasselin, the world No.136 in a second round match that could lead to him making the final eight in an event where the seeds have crumbled.
Monfils, who made the quarter-finals at the Australian Open before succumbing to powerful Canadian Milos Raonic in four sets, could do little but watch Vasselin take advantage of his weak second serve throughout the match.
The Frenchman was one of two top seeds to fall on the day with second seed, Croatia's Marin Cilic also departing the Montpellier tournament.
Cilic was defeated in straight sets by rising German youngster Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-1).
Those results mean the only seed left in Millman's half of the draw is Frenchman Benoit Paire, who takes on French veteran Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round.
Millman blitzed French wildcard Julien Benneteau in the first round, winning 6-3 6-0 to continue his rich vein in form after reaching the third round of the Australian Open.
Earlier top-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet celebrated his return to the court from a back injury with a 6-4 6-4 win over Latvia's Ernests Gulbis to book a quarter-final showdown with Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.
Baghdatis advanced through to the quarters with a 6-2 7-6 (9-7) win over Japan's Taro Daniel.
