Australian John Millman has survived a tough challenge from American teenager Frances Tiafoe to win their first-round encounter at the Atlanta Open.

Tiafoe served for the match in the third set but Millman broke back before winning a tie-breaker to claim a 5-7 6-4 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Millman will face fourth-seeded American Ryan Harrison in the round of 16.

Britain's Kyle Edmund is through to the second round after a straight sets victory over Marcos Baghdatis.

A single break of serve in each set was enough for the fifth-seeded Edmund to overcome the Cypriot 6-3 7-5 in one hour and 24 minutes.

American Donald Young, the sixth-seed, cruised past countryman Tim Smyczek 6-4 6-2, Malek Jaziri of Tunisia beat Reilly Opelka 5-7 7-6 (16-14) 6-1 and Canadian Vasek Pospisil overcame American Bjorn Fratangelo 7-5 4-6 7-6 (7-3).
