Australian NBA star Patty Mills has reportedly agreed to a new three-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs.

US media on Thursday said the newly crowned champions had struck a deal with the point guard worth $US12 million ($A13 million).

The development came the day after news broke that Mills needed surgery on a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and faced up to seven months on the sidelines.

"This will make @Patty_Mills shoulder feel better. He and the Spurs have agreed to a 3-year contract. #Spurs," San Antonio Express-News journalist Buck Harvey posted on Twitter.

Respected ESPN reporter Marc Stein later revealed the value of the deal.

Mills, whose two-year Spurs contract has expired, was said to have been in line for a healthy pay rise with several franchises expressing interest.

The 25-year-old from Canberra on Wednesday expressed concern his injury - potentially ruling him out of the opening four months of the 2014-15 NBA season - could affect a potential new deal.

"I haven't been through free-agency before; having this injury changes everything again," Mills told Fairfax Media.

"I have no idea how it works, but I'm guessing it will affect (my next deal).

"But it's out of my hands. It is what it is. We've got to make the most of the situation and move on."

The NBA's free-agency negotiating period opened on July 1, however contracts cannot be signed until July 10.
