Reigning AFL Rising Star winner Callum Mills has become the latest Sydney player to make a long-term commitment to the Swans, inking a contract extension tying him to the club until the end of the 2023 season.

Mills, 19, enjoyed a superb first season in Sydney colours in 2016 despite being played in an unfamiliar half back role..

He was already signed until the end of 2018, but on Wednesday committed to the Swans for an extra five seasons.

Among the Swans already on five-year deals are midfielders Dan Hannebery and Luke Parker, who are both contracted to the end of 2021.

Star forward Lance Franklin's mega nine-year contract doesn't expire until the end of 2022.

Mills said it was an easy decision to commit for such a long period after the club had put so much time into him since he joined their academy as a 13-year-old.

He was one of seven Sydney debutants in 2016 and was part of the side that won the minor premiership and reached the grand final.

"We've got a bright future, that's for sure," Mills said.

"We've got a lot of great kids coming through and it's very exciting times for the club.

"I just can't wait to repay them with a lot of hard work and hopefully some premierships."

Swans' coach Coach John Longmire has flagged the possibility of Mills spending more minutes this year as a midfielder, the position in which he came to the club.

However, he was again used primarily as a defender during the pre-season and was one of the club's standout players through that period.

He is coming into his sophomore campaign off what he described as a more solid pre-season than last year,

"I think we've done probably double the work so, it's definitely been harder," Mills said.

"But hopefully that puts me in the best shape possible coming into the season, which is the main goal."
