Catholic education officials remain locked in talks with Education Minister Simon Birmingham's to end the bitter war over school funding.

The sector campaigned hard against the federal government's new funding policy in the Queensland seat of Longman, where the coalition suffered a bruising by-election defeat.

The resounding loss, thanks in part to the Catholics' campaign, heaped further pressure on the leadership of Malcolm Turnbull.

Senator Birmingham is pushing for a deal to heal the wounds with Catholic and independent schools to be finalised as quickly as possible.

"The minister continues to consult with all non-government stakeholders but ... there is still work to be done to finalise the response to the SES (socio-economic status) review," a spokesman for Senator Birmingham said.
