A Canberra fisherman who went missing six days ago in the NSW Snowy Mountains has been located safe and well in a nearby town.

Robert Lockwood, 60, was discovered at the ski resort town of Jindabyne on Saturday afternoon, on the second day of a search for him.

He told police he had encountered car trouble, which led to him being stranded in the town.

Mr Lockwood had last been seen at a fishing shop in Cooma on December 8 before the alert was raised on Friday that he had not been heard from since.

Mr Lockwood had said he was heading to the Tantangara Dam to fish.

Police, volunteers and a police helicopter had scoured the dam and the 145 kilometre-wide Lake Eucumbene looking for the fisherman.
