Police have found a campsite at a northern NSW beach where they believe two missing brothers have been staying with their father.

Police said on Wednesday at least one of the brothers was seen to run from officers into bushland.

Jayden and Joseph Brady, 14 and 11, were last seen at a home in Tweed Heads, on the NSW north coast, about 3am on Sunday.

Police allege their father breached a court order preventing him having access to his sons.

Daniel Brady, 38, was arrested over the breach but allegedly refused to tell police where his sons were.

Police mounted a widespread appeal to find the boys and said there were serious concerns for their welfare.

The search turned to Tallow Beach in Byron Bay on Wednesday afternoon following a tipoff from the public.

Police say officers found a makeshift campsite at the popular surfing beach where they believe the brothers were staying with their father.

Several makeshift campsites are in almost impenetrable bushland at the beach.

The search for the boys has been called off but police say they will follow other lines of inquiry to find the boys.

"Police continue to hold serious concerns for the brothers' welfare," police said.

Acting Superintendent Shane Cribb from the Tweed Heads-Byron local area command said on Wednesday the boys' family was distraught.

It's not the first time the boys had gone missing, although previous incidents when they had gone with their father involved absences "a lot longer" than three days, Supt Cribb said.

Police confirmed Brady was on bail after appearing in the Lismore Local Court on Tuesday for allegedly breaching a domestic violence order.
