A former Knox teacher who could not be found after he was summonsed to appear at a royal commission hearing into sex abuse at the elite school has been apprehended by police.

Christopher Fotis will now give evidence at a resumed hearing into Knox on April 28.

During a hearing in February police issued a warrant for Mr Fotis's arrest after he failed to appear before the commission sitting in Sydney.

A commission spokeswoman confirmed police have arrested the 52-year-old but no details of where and when were available.

At the resumed hearing into the responses of Knox Grammar School and the Uniting Church in Australia to complaints of inappropriate conduct by teachers from 1970 to 2012, Fotis will give evidence about his time teaching there in the 1980s.

Evidence in February linked him to an incident at the school in late 1988 when an intruder wearing a Knox tracksuit and a balaclava hid under a boy's bed and tried to molest him in the early hours of the morning.

The inquiry has also heard that Fotis was allowed to resign after he was found masturbating in a car outside another school.

The then headmaster at Knox, Dr Ian Paterson, gave him a glowing reference.
