A hiker who went missing near Thredbo in the NSW Snowy Mountains has found his own way out of the bush.

The 43-year-old man was reported safe and well after he was able to find his way back to the road and his car on Tuesday morning after spending nearly 24 hours lost in wilderness.

He had called a friend on Monday morning to say he was lost after setting out on a midnight trek from Dead Horse Gap to Ramshead Range, triggering an air and land search.

The man has spoken to police at Jindabyne and returned to his home.
