Voters are divided over whether Barnaby Joyce will make a good deputy prime minister.

The NSW frontbencher was elected leader of the Nationals at a party room meeting on Thursday, replacing the retiring Warren Truss.

The Nationals leadership in government comes with the deputy prime ministership.

A Seven News-ReachTel poll found 32 per cent of voters believed Mr Joyce would be a good or very good deputy prime minister.

Thirty-four per cent said he would do an average job, while another 34 per cent said he would do a poor or very poor job.

He was most popular among older voters, with 46 per cent of over-65s giving him a favourable rating.

The survey of 2946 people taken on Thursday night put the coalition's two-party standing at 54 per cent to Labor's 46 per cent, down one point on the government's previous position.

Malcolm Turnbull's better prime minister rating slipped six points to 74.9 per cent, while Labor leader Bill Shorten's standing rose six points to 25.1 per cent.
