MLB's Scherzer set for $227m MLB move

MLB free agent pitcher Max Scherzer is reportedly set to move to Washington on a seven-year deal worth $227 million.

Coveted MLB free agent pitcher Max Scherzer is reportedly set for a move to Washington after agreeing on a seven-year contract with the Nationals.

Terms of a deal have not been officially revealed, but MLB.com reported the value as $US210 million ($A227 million).

Last March, Scherzer turned down a $US160 million ($A173 million) deal that would have extended his tenure with the Detroit Tigers.

Over his career, Scherzer has posted a 91-50 record and a 3.58 earned run average (ERA) in 207 games (198 starts).

The 30-year-old right-hander broke into the major leagues in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and also played for them in 2009 before being dealt to Detroit.

Scherzer won the 2013 American League Cy Young Award. That season, he compiled a 21-3 mark with a 2.90 ERA. Last season, he went 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA.

Scherzer joins an imposing starting rotation in Washington that also includes Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez and Doug Fister.

The Nationals had the best ERA in baseball among starting staffs last year at 3.04. They are also coming off a season in which they won 96 games and finished first in the National League East division.
