Two of rugby league's most maligned fixtures the annual City/Country clash and Monday night football are set to be axed under the NRL's new broadcast deal.
The NRL announced on Monday a $925 million deal with Channel Nine to broadcast the first grade premiership from 2018 to 2022.
Nine also retains the rights to State of Origin and international fixtures, but the NRL will now control the season schedule.
Speaking at a press conference at Rugby League Central on Monday morning to announce the new deal, NRL boss Dave Smith said the beleaguered City/Country fixture will be no more.
And with games set to be played on Thursday nights throughout the revised 25 round competition from 2018, Monday night football will come to an end at the conclusion of the current rights broadcast deal.
