A navigation app on a mobile phone has helped police find lost holiday makers in Victoria.

A couple called triple zero when they became lost in the Grampians at 6.30pm on Monday.

They had become stranded on Carters Track Zumsteins between Mt Difficult Road and Roses Gap Road.

The pair were in a rented four-wheel drive when they could go no further on the rough track, normally accessed by experienced drivers.

When Stawell police made contact with them, they were unable to establish their whereabouts.

Police gave them instructions about downloading the navigation application to their mobile phone.

The man was able to provide their co-ordinates and the 56-year-old man and 43-year-old woman, both from Sydney, were found safe and well.
