Mobile complaints fall to seven-year low

Phone data usage warnings from telco providers have helped reduce mobile services complaints to their lowest level in seven years.

Complaints about mobile phones have dropped to a six-year low.

The Telecommunications Ombudsman received 14,743 complaints about mobiles between last October and December - a 21 per cent drop on a year earlier and the lowest recorded since 2008.

The fall was driven by a drop in complaints about excess data charges, dodgy reception and billing issues.

Excess data charges complaints dropped by more than a third, year-on-year, as data usage warnings and more appropriate plan choices benefited mobile users.

Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association chief executive Chris Althaus said the result was pleasing, considering the volume of data downloaded on mobiles.

"Consumers are becoming more aware and informed of their use of data on mobiles," he said.

Mr Althaus said the introduction of data usage alerts by telcos to warn them when they were approaching their monthly limits had helped.

"(These) are issued to customers when they reach 50 per cent, 85 per cent and 100 per cent of their data usage limit to keep them informed so they can avoid bill shock," he said.
