The mobile in your hand could well be the victim of a cybercrime in the next year.

Half of cybercrime attacks will be targeted at mobile devices by the end of 2015.

That's the assessment of credit data analysts Veda.

Such attacks on financial services typically take place in mobile banking, online banking and online money transfers.

The increasing popularity of online shopping and websites that prompt consumers to store their credit card information are also easy targets for criminals, who turn stolen identities into cash.

"Today's cyber-criminals are talented, organised, efficient and well funded, with sophisticated equipment," Veda's general manager of fraud and identity solutions Imelda Newton says.

She says in the past year, they have successfully taken personal and financial data from hundreds of millions of consumers around the world by fraudulently opening new accounts, taking over existing accounts and committing payment fraud.

Senior executives from banks, credit unions, card companies and international financial institutions will be joined in Sydney on Thursday by law enforcement officials and international anti-fraud experts to discuss new threats in financial services fraud.

"The challenge for most financial institutions has shifted from detecting fake account access to stopping valid customers from being caught in the fraud net," Ms Newton says.
