Modern Family is a history lesson for US

Modern Family: An Aussie Adventure screens on Sunday night on Network Ten and is an Australian history lesson for US viewers.

Americans are always been bagged for knowing little about Australia and Modern Family's producers appear to have taken that on board for the show's trip Down Under.

Modern Family: An Aussie Adventure screens on Sunday night on Network Ten and is an Australian history lesson and tourism promotion rolled into one for US viewers.

Americans will learn that Australia was once a penal colony, it's not only a country but a continent and Sydney is a cross between LA and New York.

They'll also find there's topless bathing at Bondi, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is there to be climbed, boomerangs do come back and a person can be a "total bogan".

There's also gags thrown in for Australian audiences which will likely be totally lost on US viewers such as a scene based on the disappearance of Azaria Chamberlain.

Modern Family's Aussie Adventure is the fourth time the show has been filmed on location.

The cast have previously been to Disneyland, Wyoming and Hawaii.

The episode was filmed in February in Sydney and on the Great Barrier reef although the later is more a holiday scene setter towards the end of the episode.

The premise for the trip to Australia is based on Phil Dunphy, played by Ty Burrell, learning he was conceived in Australia.

He has been bequeathed money to travel Down Under to reconnect with his heritage and is told he must visit the Great Barrier Reef, go bush and climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The show beautifully weaves the punch lines through the story arc and some of the characters have their own adventures.

Mitch and Cam ending up with a group of bikies and Phil being punched by a Kangaroo and Luke and Manny go in search of boobs at Bondi.

Even if you're not a fan of Modern family or have never tuned-in, the one-off Down Under episode is easy to follow and enjoyable as a stand alone program.
