Modern Family star prefers local hot spots

Modern Family's Sarah Hyland says she prefers doing "local things" and hasn't ruled out trying crocodile while she's Down Under.

The cast of Modern Family will visit the big tourist attractions in Australia, but star Sarah Hyland says she prefers to check out some of the hot spots for locals, such as Paddy's Markets in Sydney.

The 23-year-old actor, who plays teenager Haley Dunphy in the TV comedy series, is in Australia with the sitcom's cast to film a special holiday episode.

Hyland visited Sydney Aquarium on Wednesday, and the Harbour Bridge climb and Great Barrier Reef are also on the Modern Family itinerary, but the star revealed on Thursday she preferred the less-popular attractions.

"I like to do more local things," she told AAP.

"I did some flea market shopping at Paddy's Markets and got a boomerang, didgeridoo and coasters."

Hyland also hasn't ruled out trying some local cuisine, such as crocodile.

"I've eaten alligator before in New Orleans, so maybe (I'll try crocodile)," she said.

However, the thought of eating kangaroo makes her uncomfortable.

"I don't think I can eat kangaroo. I don't think I can pull myself to do it."

She's not a fan of Vegemite, either.

"I've tried Vegemite before in the States," she said. "I'm not the biggest fan of it. I think it's something you have to grow up with."

Taking some time out from her Modern Family, Hyland was speaking at the Australian premiere of her new film, Vampire Academy, at Sydney's George St cinemas.
