Juan Pablo Montoya's thrilling come-from-behind win in the Indianapolis 500 victory has earned him $US2,450,000 ($A3.13 million).

The Colombian driver's earnings were part of a $13,397,315 overall purse.

The cheque amounts were announced at the annual victory banquet Monday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Australian Will Power, who was narrowly beaten, earned $US792,500 ($A1 million), and third-placed Charlie Kimball $US564,000 ($A721,000).

Scott Dixon, who finished fourth after starting on the pole, earned $US616,000 ($A787,000).

Montoya's victory comes 15 years after his Indy 500 win in 2000.

He left IndyCar for Formula One and later struggled in NASCAR for seven years before making a return to IndyCar in 2014.

Montoya, who also won the Grand Prix of St Petersburg to start the season, leads the IndyCar series standings.
