Sydney workers evacuated from buildings in the city's centre have spoke of their confusion and fear in the wake of a siege that broke out this morning inside a cafe in Martin Place.

As police cordoned off the area surrounding the café, police and passers-by gathered in Martin Place awaiting news.

Many office workers evacuated from nearby buildings also gathered in Hype Park or surrounding streets.

Businessman Matthew Clarke said all staff at his office were told to evacuate as the news broke; some were sent to another office while the rest were told to go home.

“The mood was relatively calm,” he said. “But obviously there was some tension.”
Solicitor Norma Markovski was on her way to the law society to meet a client this morning, unaware of the developing situation.

“A policeman stopped me and told me to turn around,” she said.

Many workers remained inside buildings on lockdown.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott today urged Australians to stay calm and “go about their business as usual” as the police operation continues.
