Mooning is now explicitly outlawed in Victoria but it's a bit cheeky to call it an entirely new offence.
Those who put their backside on public display face up to two months in jail for a first offence and six months behind bars for repeat exhibitions.
The new definition brings the offence into line with other obscene behaviours such as singing offensive songs or swearing in public.
Victorian Attorney-General Martin Pakula has dismissed suggestions the legislative change means Victoria is becoming a nanny state.
"It's always been an offence, all we've done is separate indecent exposure (eg mooning) from sexual exposure (eg flashing)," he tweeted on Monday.
The change is among a suite of amendments to the Summary Offences Act passed earlier this month.
