US actress Julianne Moore has signed on to star in a new gay rights film, based on a Oscar-winning documentary.
Moore, 53, has signed on to portray Laurel Hester, a New Jersey cop who challenged government officials and demanded pension benefits for her same-sex partner Stacie Andree as she battled lung cancer, in Freeheld.
The project has been in the works since 2008, when Juno star Ellen Page, now 26, was brought onboard as Andree.
It is now moving forward with The Hangover's Zach Galifianakis singing a deal to star in the film, according to TheWrap.com.
Freeheld will be directed Peter Sollett.
The movie is based on the 2007 documentary of the same name, which won director Cynthia Wade an Oscar in the Best Documentary, Short Subjects category.
Freeheld won't be Moore's first role as a lesbian - she starred as Annette Bening's partner in The Kids Are All Right, which garnered four Academy Award nods and won two Golden Globes.
