Daniel Morcombe's parents hope a movie about their son will take their heartbreaking but inspiring story to a global audience.
Australian director Peter Cousens has signed on for the movie, which has a working title of Where is Daniel? and is slated to be filmed in 2016.
The film will portray 13-year-old Daniel's 2003 abduction and the police investigation that eventually led to his killer's arrest.
The movie will also tell the story of his family's unrelenting search for justice, Bruce and Denise Morcombe said.
"I think it will hold important messages for other people, other parents that have suffered, or are suffering tragedy in their own life," Bruce Morcombe said on Sunday.
"How we've stood up and an incredible number of people follow us, wish us well and ... they've drawn strength from us.
"So that's a good thing and I think the movie will extend that, and globally, that's pretty exciting."
Child sex offender Brett Peter Cowan, 45, is serving a life sentence for Daniel's murder.
He was arrested almost eight years after the murder in an elaborate police sting.
Peter Cousens, whose film Freedom stars Cuba Gooding Jr and is due for a US release this year, said the Morcombes' story had some profound messages.
"Not only about the battle between good and evil and really the sweet revenge which the Morcombes have served up to evil, but also the extraordinary uplifting story that Bruce and Denise have been able to create for themselves," he said.
Casting is not expected to take place until the script is finished.
Heritage Films will produce the movie, and founder Rod Hopping hopes the project will attract "some of Australia's finest international actors".
Filming is to take place on the Sunshine Coast where Daniel was abducted.
