More autism training for SA teachers

South Australian teachers are to get extra training to help them cope better with children with autism.

South Australian teachers are to get special training to better help students with autism.

The training will start next year and continue in 2015 with at least 40 teachers involved across public and private schools.

They will then use their new skills to train others.

Education Minister Jennifer Rankine says the government wants to ensure teachers have the skills to deal with the challenges of children with autism.

"The training will help to re-engage students and enable them to move back into mainstream classes," Ms Rankine said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Teaching expertise in this area is paramount in giving every child every chance to succeed."

Autism SA Chief Executive Jon Martin said the government had recognised the unique needs of students with an autism spectrum disorder.

He said the extra training would enhance the educational outcomes of students and result in more autism-friendly school communities.
