More club members at AFL grand final

There will be an extra 4,000 club members at the grand final this year after the AFL re-jigged the formula for the showpiece match.

Members of clubs playing off in the AFL grand final will find it slightly easier to get their hands on a prized ticket to the showpiece match this year.

The AFL has announced it will re-distribute 4,000 tickets from corporate packages to be available exclusively for paid-up club members.

The move means each club that reaches this year's decider on September 30 will have 17,000 tickets per club available for members.

The change comes after many Western Bulldogs members missed out in the build-up to the 2016 grand final against Sydney.

The match was the Bulldogs' first grand final in 55 years, and their first win in 62.

The AFL fans association and the Victorian Greens have campaigned for extra seats at the MCG to be available to grassroots fans.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the change-up to "Australia's premier sporting event" was due to ballooning club membership.

"There is always huge demand for tickets. We have to balance a range of interests, including all clubs, the industry and our partners," he said in a statement.

"The MCG is always full on grand final day with AFL supporters, but this will ensure a greater representation of the members from the two clubs competing for the premiership.

"The allocations to MCC membership and AFL membership have not altered, as both MCC members and AFL members are fans of our game."
