Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has caused more controversy by dismissing the military credentials of US Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war.

The billionaire businessman said McCain, a decorated aviator who was tortured during five years in a Vietnamese prison camp, wasn't a war hero because he was captured.

The remark triggered uproar, with other Republicans including Mitt Romney and Scott Walker rushing to McCain's defence.
