More delays over McGrath extradition

Lawyers for a former Catholic brother facing extradition to Australia are seeking more time to make submissions to the New Zealand justice minister.

Attempts to send a former Catholic brother back to Australia to face hundreds of child sex charges are subject to further delays.

Bernard Kevin McGrath, 65, faces 252 child sex charges in Australia and Canberra is seeking to extradite him from New Zealand.

A Christchurch district court judge agreed to McGrath's extradition on June 11, 2013, but a final decision must be made by NZ Justice Minister Judith Collins.

McGrath's lawyers were given a final deadline of July 1 to make submissions to Ms Collins on the extradition.

A further extension to that deadline to July 14 was sought, but Ms Collins refused.

McGrath's lawyers are challenging Ms Collins' refusal to grant more time in the High Court at Christchurch and a hearing has been set down for July 16.

However, an interim order of Justice Cameron Mander released on Thursday says Ms Collins should not make a decision on McGrath's case before the close of business on July 14, or until his submissions have been received.

McGrath is on bail.

A number of suppression orders have surround the reporting of the case.
