More drugs found in SA prisons

More drugs have been found in South Australia's prisons, with 427 drug finds in local jails in 2012/13 compared to 299 the previous year.

Prisoners in South Australia are increasingly being caught with drugs, with visitors also being nabbed with prohibited items, a report shows.

The Department of Correctional Services annual report has revealed officers made 427 drug finds in local prisons in 2012/13 compared to 299 the previous year.

But they conducted more searches - 83,199 last financial year, up from 57,057 in 2011/12.

Correctional Services Minister Michael O'Brien said an increasing prison population meant correctional services officers had to be vigilant to ensure prisoners did not have drugs or other contraband.

The department's report also showed 13 prison visitors were caught with prohibited or restricted items and detained by police.
