Flights in and out of Bali have been cancelled as volcanic ash continues to spew from the Mount Raung volcano, with travellers being warned the delays could extend through the weekend.

Both Jetstar and Virgin Australia said on Friday they are monitoring the situation and will continue to keep customers updated on any new information.

"We will continue to closely monitor the movement of the ash cloud and update customers if continued poor flying conditions lead to further cancellations throughout the day," Jetstar said in a statement on Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the current conditions will linger over the next few days.

"We are expecting these conditions to persist for a few days, so we are expecting periods of disruption to come and go," said Chris Davies from BoM's Darwin office on Friday.

"We are pretty much at the mercy of the winds; by Monday and Tuesday next week we should see the winds turn around."

Customers are advised not to travel to airports before checking the status of their flights on the airlines' websites.

"We understand this is frustrating and want to get customers moving to their destination as soon as it safe to do so," Jetstar said.

The Mount Raung volcano has caused chaos for travellers since it began spewing ash in early July and is still erupting up to a height of about 20,000 feet (6096 metres).
