More jobs, fewer hours in June quarter

Official data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has shown a spike in jobs worked in the country in the June quarter but a decline in hours.

The number of jobs held in Australia rose in the June quarter, but fewer hours were worked across the nation.

The number of filled jobs rose by 0.8 per cent, or 116,800 jobs in the three months to June, to 14 million jobs , according to seasonally-adjusted labour figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Friday.

Most of the new jobs were people's main source of employment, while 4,700 represented Australians picking up a second role.

Almost 50,000 of those new jobs were in the construction industry, bringing the total number of jobs in the sector to 1.1 million.

It is now the fourth-biggest industry in the economy and the fastest growing.

Despite the jobs boost, Australians worked 25.7 million fewer hours in the quarter compared to the previous one, with total hours at 5.2 billion.

The income people earnt through working rose by 1.0 per cent in the three months to June to $243.5 billion.
