More officers have been added to a police taskforce investigating the discovery of a young girl's skeletal remains in South Australia.

Another five staff have been added to taskforce Mallee, taking its numbers to 20, as police continue to try to identity the murder victim - a fair-haired girl aged between two-and-a-half and four.

Her remains were found dumped in scrub two weeks ago alongside the Karoonda Highway, east of Adelaide.

After she was killed her body was placed in a suitcase which was also found dumped in scrub along with girl's clothes and other items.

Detective Superintendent Des Bray says 53 children have now been ruled out as potential victims, including missing UK girl Madeleine McCann. But the identity of the girl remains a mystery despite 550 reports to Crime Stoppers.

"The investigation is continuing at full speed while we await the results of forensic analysis," Supt Bray said on Friday.

"The massive public response has generated many lines of inquiry in addition to opportunities being identified by investigators."

Detectives are also still seeking a man aged about 60 who was seen in the area where the remains were found in both April and May this year.

He was spotted carrying a dark suitcase.
