More proof budget went down well: Hockey

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute's monthly consumer confidence index surged 6.4 per cent in May, buoyed by the budget and lower interest rates.

Treasurer Joe Hockey believes business confidence will follow the growing spirits of consumers after his second budget.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute monthly consumer confidence index released on Wednesday surged 6.4 per cent in May following last week's budget and an earlier interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank .

"They are another indicator that the budget has gone down well ... and increasingly, business confidence is going to filter through to a stronger economy," Mr Hockey told reporters in Darwin on Wednesday.
