More than 1400 Vic kids locked in cars

Paramedics are warning parents not to gamble with their children's lives after they recorded a 50 per cent jump in babies being locked in hot cars.

More than 1400 children have been rescued from locked cars in Victoria, with five triple-zero calls a day last summer.

Paramedics last year rescued 374 babies under 12 months of age - representing a 50 per cent increase in calls.

There's been a 23 per cent increase in calls about children under 13, according to Ambulance Victoria, which recorded 1433 calls from September 1, 2014, to August 31, 2015.

Almost half of these happened at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm.

Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that on a 29 degree day, the inside of a car could reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and hit 60 degrees within 20 minutes.
