Liberal federal director Tony Nutt says a lot more needs to be done to increase the number of women in parliament, but his party won't be setting quotas.

Mr Nutt said in a speech on Thursday, in which he reviewed the 2016 election campaign, his organisation should go around each state and territory identifying women and supporting them to win preselection.

But he rejected the need for quotas or goals, saying there were "all sorts of reasons" why the number of women in the coalition party room had fallen to its lowest point since 1993.
