Mornington Peninsula fire under control

An emergency bushfire warning has been downgraded for Hastings, Bittern and Crib Point on the outskirts of Melbourne as a bushfire is contained.

A bushfire that had threatened homes on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula has subsided.

Firefighters were able to stop the fast moving bushfire, which was heading towards suburban homes in Hastings, Bittern and Crib Point late on Saturday.

The warning has been downgraded to an advice message, meaning the community is no longer under threat.

A community meeting will be held at the Graham Myers Reserve, Hendersons Rd Bittern at 9pm on Saturday.

The Country Fire Authority says there has been some damage to houses south of Reid Parade.

The fire was first reported just after 2pm.

Evacuated resident Barbara Tipper said she had noticed the fire moving towards her home in Bittern from Hastings, and she rushed home to pack her personal belongings.

"It was getting pretty scary," she told ABC 24 on Saturday.

"There's lots of smoke and we have no hope if a fire gets in here."

As she left Bittern, the roads were jammed as other residents fled the fire, Ms Tipper said.

The fire has caused a suspension of trains on the line from Frankston to Stony Point.
