Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has again defended the way the federal government releases information about Operation Sovereign Borders.
The military-style campaign aims to stop asylum-seeker boats coming to Australia.
Limited information about boat interceptions and turn-backs are provided at weekly media briefings by Mr Morrison and operation commander Lieutenant General Angus Campbell.
"Real-time reporting of people smuggling activities only advantages people smugglers," Mr Morrison told ABC Radio on Monday.
He said the nature of Sovereign Borders requires "operational security".
Mr Morrison flagged the government's rejection of a Senate demand to table documentation related to boat arrivals.
The government will make clear its position later on Monday, but the minister noted previous Labor governments had rejected similar demands from the upper house.
"I'm not going to join the opposition and the Greens campaign for the people smugglers' right to know," Mr Morrison told Sky News.
