Morrison backs immigration dept

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has backed his department officials facing criticism over recent weeks.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison insists he has full confidence in his department despite the bungled release of asylum seeker data and the Manus Island detention centre death.

The Department of Immigration has been criticised after it accidentally released thousands of asylum seekers' personal details on its website.

Mr Morrison himself has also been the subject of recent criticism over his handling of information following the Manus Island detention centre riot and the circumstances surrounding the death of Iranian asylum seeker Reza Barati.

Speaking to reporters in Darwin, Mr Morrison said he had full confidence in his departmental officials, singling out secretary Martin Bowles and Operation Sovereign Borders commander Lieutenant-General Angus Campbell.

"I have full confidence in all of them and they are doing an outstanding job," Mr Morrison said.

Their success was evident because no boats have arrived to Australian shores in 10 weeks.

"That's something I'm very proud of."

Mr Morrison says he has written to The Guardian news site, which broke news of the department leak, to ensure they do not share the data with third parties. It has not yet responded to the letter, he says.
