Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has cancelled a visit to a Melbourne detention centre after protesters planned to confront him at the gates.

He was due to visit the Broadmeadows Detention Centre on Friday but police said he cancelled on Thursday night.

Police said Mr Morrison's office was aware of the planned protest.

Lucy Honan, from the Refugee Action Collective, said not showing up to face protesters was a "cowardly act".

"He can't front up to people. He can't front up to the truth," Ms Honan told AAP.

Protest speakers called on the federal government to reveal what happened to two asylum seeker boats heading towards Australia.

Mr Morrison's office did not return requests for comment or details.
